Why is my new asphalt driveway cracking? | |
My driveway is only a year old and it is already cracking. What could possibly be causing it!?
Thank you both for your responses. First, I had sealed the driveway this past summer and unfortunately it did not prevent the cracking. Second, the cracks are meandering cracks that do not appear to be along straight lines such as would be if concrete slabs were causing them from below. Does any one think that I should go after the manufacturer of the asphalt for making bad material. Maybe the contractor did something wrong. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

1when they were putting down the asphalt they didnt put enough gravel underneath of it. so when the ground moves it affects the asphalt more than if it was on enough gravel. and if there is enough then the asphalt is flexable enough to move with the ground but when it moves a lot it isnt.

do you have trees nearby your drive? it could well be that with the summer we had they might be sucking the water out of the ground and causing movemment. also trees do damage most tarmac drives as the roots tend to push up the driveway, do you know if the contractors dug the drive out deep enough???
