can a drive way be grafted with out issues

I had a drive way put in and the paver broke down halfway through the job. We ended up with a low spot and a puddle forming when it rained. The contractor is using a saw to cut square checker board marks in the drive way witch he is calling grafting and I guess he is going to fill in the void with blacktop. Is this the proper way to repair this or will we have issues down the road with this.
