How long does it take for an asphalted highway to become quiet and not so rough?

The highway in front of my house was just recently repaved about a week ago, and it sounds horrible when you drive on it, and is really really rough feeling. How long do I have to wait for the noise to go away and for loose gravel to stop being thrown up by tires? Is this normal or was this a bad paving job?

From: Randy Martin

its normal to spread the newly laid asphalt with sand and small stones. the more cars drive on the highway, the more the sand spread on the sides of the road.
