what can I use to cut and remove a 1ftX12ft section of asphalt?

I just bought an older house that has cedar siding. The siding and sheathing are a little below ground level. Needless to say I have some repairs to make. On top of that, the asphalt that was put down for parking butts up right against the house. I need to cut and remove at least a foot away from the house. I don't know how deep the asphalt is. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
