not as deep as the nile a shallow asphalt is always best but then again it has to be deeper than your average puddle hey i think i might need to think about this one

Asphalt drive is only as good as the base it is install over.
That being said on a sound base with normal car traffic three inches (compacted thickness) should be sufficient.
If you have heavier vehicles four to six inches in not out of the question.
