There are several ways of attaching material to concrete without using nails. Host Jon Eakes offers several suggestions.
- The first method utilizes a tool called a power-actuated fastener, which uses a hammer to set off a bullet charges; this in turn forces a fastener into the concrete (be sure to wear eye protection when you use this tool). This provides a strong hold; if the fastener is put in slightly sideways or a rock gets between the fastener and the concrete, however, the hold will loosen over time.
- For a somewhat stronger hold, use a drill with a concrete bit. Be sure to use the proper drill bit: one that has serrated edges (figure A) and is designed to drill through concrete. The screw, which also should be specifically designed for concrete, should be the appropriate size for the bit being used.
- An important rule of thumb: Drill the fastener 1-1/4 inches into the concrete for a solid hold.
